Hanoi Wood 2022 is jointly organised by BIFA, VIFORES and Panels & Furniture Group of wood magazines.

1. Hanoi is the fifth largest wood product exporter in Vietnam and the largest in North Vietnam. Hanoi is the fifth largest wood products exporting province in Vietnam, with wood product export value of US$400 million in 2018; Binh Duong is the largest wood products exporting province with US$3.7 billion, followed by Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Dinh. Hanoi’s wood industry is welcoming more local small and medium enterprises(SME) and foreign direct investments(FDI) that have built their new facilities in Hanoi. A growing number of these factories are manufacturing more export-oriented wood products and specialise in only one type of wood-based products such as plywood, medium-density fibreboards and block boards.

2. Incentives to woo overseas and local woodworking companies to Hanoi. The government is offering incentives such as tax exemptions and lower land rental charges to encourage overseas companies to expand and set up new factories in Northern Vietnam. Swedish furniture giant IKEA announced earlier this year that it will be investing US$450 million to build a retail centre network and warehouse in Hanoi.

3. Abundant skilled labour and raw materials. Raw materials are more accessible – there are 3 million hectares of Acacia plantations and 1 million hectares of Rubber wood plantations, mostly located in Central and North Vietnam. Compared to the South, manpower is more easily available in North Vietnam. Infrastructure such as roads and transportation are well-developed and in place.

4. A rapidly growing domestic market. Vietnam’s domestic market should not be ignored. This year, the Vietnamese population is expected to spend US$2 billion on locally produced wood products, equivalent of one-fifth of Vietnam’s wood products export value of US$10.5 billion. Vietnam has a young population. 70 per cent of its 97 million people are under 35 years old; 13 per cent belongs to an emerging middle class that is expected to increase to 26 per cent by 2026.
