FSC brand recognition growing in Brazil

Jun 29, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. Recognition of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) brand is growing strongly in Brazil, according to a new poll. As Timber Trades Journal reports, recognition of FSC certification now stands at 22% among the Brazilian public, up from just 1% three years ago. Some 81% also said they would prefer certified timber products and were willing to pay more for them than uncertified wood. “The poll indicates a very promising scenario for certification in Brazil,” said Karina Aharonian, certified forest products buyers group co-ordinator. She said the poll shows certification is an increasingly effective instrument for rainforest protection and sustainable development. The poll interviewed more than 2,000 Brazilians aged 18 or over. Campaigns in magazines, on television and on the metro have been held in Brazil during recent years to promote the need to choose sustainable forest products.
