Georgia combating illegal timber-processing mills

Sep 07, 2004. /Lesprom Network/. Georgia started the liquidation of illegal timber-processing mills in Borzhomi gorge, Georgian Ministry of environment protection and natural resources announced. Minister of environment protection and natural resources Tamara Lebanidze visited Borzhomi gorge on Monday to check the operation of the timber enterprises in the region. The checkup has revealed that 200 of the 205 timber mills in the region have no licenses and are operating illegally. The mills will be closed within the next days under the prosecutor’s order. The Minister will repeatedly visit Borzhomi region till October, 2 to control the results of the campaign against illegal logging.
