Holzindustrie Schweighofer invests Euro 150 million in new plant in Covasna, Romania

Mar 29, 2013. /Lesprom Network/. Holzindustrie Schweighofer invests Euro 150 million in a state of the art wood working factory in Covasna, Romania. The new plant (70 ha) will be located in the county of Covasna and will start to operate within 2014. 650 new jobs will be created directly, in related industries 2,000 jobs will be generated, as the company said in a press release received by Lesprom Network.

The planned annual cutting of the plant will be 800,000 cubic metres. 70 % out of the produced lumber will be further processed and 100,000 cubic metres therefrom will be used for glued lam products for the Japanese market after the first step. In a second step Holzindustrie Schweighofer plans to produce glued lam products for the domestic market also.

80% of the produced lumber will be exported. The most important market remains Asia (mostly Japan). The existing further processing mills in Siret and Comanesti will be supplied with raw material by the new plant too. By-products (chips) and finished products will be transported by rail using 100 railcars per day.

The need for thermal and electrical energy of the plant will be covered by the most modern combined heat and power plant which will be fed with biomass only. The generated heat will be used for drying lumber and the production of 100,000 tons of pellets for the European market.

The Schweighofer Group is an Austrian family business organized as a holding structure. The forest-based industry is the company's core business. All its production facilities are located in Romania. In Austria, Schweighofer Fiber focuses on the production of high-quality cellulose and bioenergy.
