Export earnings
from the export of processed timber from Myanmar so far this fiscal
year amounted to about $60 million. It is estimated that the figure for the
year could be over $80 million, around $20-30 million more than before the log
export ban, ITTO reported.
However, analysts
point out that the annual revenue from exports of wood products (logs and
sawnwood) used to be over $700 million annually in the years before the log export
ban.
If Myanmar is to achieve this
level of exports in the future considerable investment in modern processing
plant and in training of mill operatives is required.
