Jan 08, 2009. /Lesprom.com/. Looking to overseas markets to offset slowing domestic growth, Marubeni Corp. plans to double pulp exports to China to 1 million tons a year by 2010, Lesprom Network informed according to the Tradingmarkets.
The trading company has its own pulp production plants in Canada and Indonesia and until now has exported 500 thousand tons of pulp a year to China from the Canadian facility. To increase business with China, it is looking at adding production lines at its Indonesian plant, which can now turn out 490 thousand tons a year. It is also exploring the possibility of securing a new pulp plant elsewhere in Asia.
Accompanying the increase in exports to China, Marubeni expects to handle at least 2 million tons of pulp worldwide each year starting in 2010, with overseas sales accounting for more than 75% of that. This would give it the largest pulp and paper sales volume among Japan's general trading companies.
In the future, the plan is to shift focus from the Japanese market to emerging markets like China, where growth in paper demand is expected. Marubeni is also expanding other paper operations in China and with Oji Paper Co. is pursuing a tree-planting program in Guangdong Province.
