Energywood is an important source of renewable fuel in Finland, supplying heating and bioenergy production. The purchase volume of energywood fell in 2025 by 45% compared to the previous year, according to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).

Volumes of delimbed stems and whole trees decreased by roughly one half, while logging residue volumes declined by two fifths. In total, 3.5 million m3 of energywood were recorded in trade statistics for the year.

In 2025, the average price paid for energywood was Euro 16.0 per cubic metre in stumpage sales and Euro 39.7 per cubic metre in delivery sales. The average price of delimbed stems fell to Euro 23.4 in stumpage sales and to Euro 45.6 in delivery sales. The stumpage price of logging residues rose to Euro 14.9, while the delivery price fell to Euro 28.8.

Prices and price changes varied regionally. For delimbed stems, the price difference between regions reached up to Euro 6 in stumpage sales and nearly Euro 10 in delivery sales. For logging residues, regional differences reached Euro 8 in stumpage and Euro 12 in delivery sales.

In stumpage sales, three quarters of all energywood were purchased, while one quarter were sold through delivery contracts. Logging residues accounted for 52% of the total trade volume, delimbed stems for 31%, whole trees for 14%, and stumps for 3%.

During the last quarter of 2025, 0.6 million m3 of energywood were purchased, less than half the volume recorded a year earlier. Prices of delimbed stems declined by 14% from the previous quarter in stumpage sales to Euro 20.6 per cubic metre, and by 3% in delivery sales to Euro 44.0. The stumpage price of logging residues fell by 15% to 12.7 euros, while the delivery price rose by 5% to Euro 27.2.

Compared with the highest average prices recorded in late 2024, the stumpage price of delimbed stems decreased by nearly Euro 6, and the delivery price by just over 4 euros. The stumpage price of logging residues fell by more than Euro 3, while the delivery price dropped by nearly Euro 9.

The total recorded trade covers roughly two thirds of all energywood purchased from private forests.
