Rengo Co., Ltd. has been developing applications of Viscopearl (spherical cellulose beads) made from wood pulp as water purification material for land-based aquaculture. Rengo announces that the product has been selected by a company engaged in development and sales of land-based aquaculture systems, following demonstration tests that have confirmed a certain level of effectiveness.

This product is a porous carrier primarily composed of cellulose and features a structure conducive for microorganisms to take root. In closed land-based recirculating aquaculture systems, a water purification process is necessary to decompose harmful substances generated from aquatic life feed and excrement. Using this product supports the denitrification process, where microorganisms break down nitrogen compounds (nitrate nitrogen) in wastewater, and Rengo even expects the possibility to eliminate the need to add organic matter.

In demonstration tests, it was confirmed that this product has significant denitrification effects even in an oxygen-rich environment (aerobic conditions), whereas denitrification treatment has conventionally been conducted in an oxygen-poor environment (anaerobic conditions). A patent application has been filed for this product, and development continues with the aim of further enhancing its performance.

Rengo will continue to contribute to revitalizing the fisheries industry, such as land-based aquaculture, through developing applications of Viscopearl, while also working to develop fisheries materials with reduced environmental impact.
