Södra has announced a pioneering step in its logistics operations by incorporating a battery-electric long-haul truck for transporting woodchips. The electric truck, provided by Scania, is a cornerstone in Södra's ambitious journey towards achieving fossil-free transportation. This initiative aligns with the broader objectives of the Swedish forest industry to enhance the efficiency and eco-friendliness of its logistics.

Truck transportation is a critical component of the industry's operations and is responsible for approximately 5% of Södra's indirect fossil CO2 emissions. The introduction of this electric woodchip truck in regions such as Blekinge and eastern Småland signifies a decisive move towards a sustainable future.

The truck is slated for delivery by the end of 2024, with a rigorous testing phase planned from 2025 to 2027. During this period, the truck is expected to cover an impressive 100,000 kilometres annually, demonstrating its capability and resilience in real-world conditions. Additionally, Södra is set to enhance the charging infrastructure at its mills, ensuring seamless integration of the electric truck into its daily operations.

Henrik Brodin, the project manager for Södra's fossil-free initiative, highlighted the significance of this project, not only for Södra but for the entire industry. "This battery-electric woodchip truck is a crucial step in our journey towards electrification. It offers us invaluable insights and contributes significantly to our net-zero emissions goal by 2040," Brodin stated.

This initiative is part of the broader TREE project, led by the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden (Skogforsk), aiming to ensure that 50% of new truck sales in the forestry sector are battery-electric by 2030. With over 20 partners, including forest and logistics companies, the project seeks to address challenges related to route optimization and charging infrastructure.

The electric woodchip truck, a Scania 45R, boasts a load capacity of up to 64 tonnes and is optimized for regional transport. With an estimated range of 250 to 300 kilometres, three electric motors, and a rapid charging capability, this truck is set to revolutionize Södra's logistics operations.

Patrik Svanberg from Scania Sverige AB expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "This transition to fossil-free electrified transport is a significant development. We are eager to see the electric woodchip truck's performance in Södra's day-to-day operations."
