China decreases softwood lumber imports by 34% in July

In July, China’s imports of softwood lumber fell 34% year-on-year to 1.24 million m3. The value of imports fell 32% to $297 million. According to Lesprom Analytics, the average price of imported softwood lumber in China decreased 4.6% from June to $240 per m3, which is 3% higher than in July 2021.

In the first seven months of 2022, China’s imports of softwood lumber declined 21% year-on-year to 9.2 million m3. The value of imports dipped 4% to $2.2 billion. Average price of softwood lumber jumped 21% to $243 per m3.

In July, China's average pine lumber import price downed 3% to $241/m3 from the previous month, but was 3% higher than a year ago. The average spruce and fir lumber import price decreased 6% to $247/m3 from the previous month, which is still 2.7% higher than in July 2021.

Russia’s share amounted to 81.4% of China’s softwood lumber imports in July 2022. Russia is China’s biggest softwood lumber exporter with second-ranked Belarus at 4.1% of total exports, while Canada takes 2.5% and Finland 2.4%.
