Privately owned housing units authorized by building permits run at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,376,000 in January, down 5.4% from a revised 1,455,000 in December and down 5.8% from 1,460,000 in January 2025, while housing starts rise to 1,487,000 and housing completions rise to 1,527,000 on the same basis, based on figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Single-family authorizations run at a rate of 873,000 in January, down 0.9% from a revised 881,000 in December. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more run at a rate of 453,000 in January.
Housing starts run at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,487,000 in January, up 7.2% from a revised 1,387,000 in December and up 9.5% from 1,358,000 in January 2025. Single-family housing starts run at a rate of 935,000, down 2.8% from a revised 962,000 in December, and the rate for units in buildings with five units or more is 524,000.
Housing completions run at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,527,000 in January, up 4.8% from a revised 1,457,000 in December but down 7.5% from 1,651,000 in January 2025. Single-family housing completions run at a rate of 970,000, down 1.0% from a revised 980,000 in December, and the rate for units in buildings with five units or more is 532,000.
