In March 2023, the forest industry in Finland harvested a total of 6.5 million m3 of logs for industrial use, which was down 3% from the previous year and 3% from the five-year March average. Sawlogs accounted for 2.7 million m3, and pulpwood accounted for 3.9 million m3 of the industrial roundwood removal, reported Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).
The removal volume of logs in January-March for use by the forest industries was up by 1% compared to the previous year, accounting for 18.5 million m3. However, this volume was still down 1% from the five-year average.
The industrial logs removal from non-industrial private forests in Finland was 5.6 million m3, which was down by 4% from the year before. Meanwhile, the felling volume in companies' forests and state-owned forests in Finland rose by 2%, accounting for 1.0 million m3.
In March 2023, the removals of energywood in Finland totalled 525 thousand m3.
These statistics indicate a mixed performance for the forest industry in Finland, with some segments showing growth while others showing decline. Nonetheless, the rise in the felling volume in companies' forests and state-owned forests in Finland may indicate a positive outlook for the industry in the coming months.
