MOSCOW, /Prime-TASS/ -- The Russian government should ensure sustainable forestry in Russia when developing the timber industry, President Vladimir Putin said Monday. He was speaking at a meeting of the State Council Presidium on the development of the timber industry in Russia. The State Council Presidium is an influential presidential advisory body comprised of regional leaders. Putin said the development of the timber industry was capable of providing the state with significant revenues. He said budget revenues from the timber industry have declined significantly in the past several years, while illegal business activities in the sector have been thriving. Putin said the government should bring order to the timber industry to ensure stable development in the sector, sustainable forestry and increased state revenues. The government is expected to discuss the concept of the timber industry’s long-term development at its meeting Tuesday.
