MOSCOW, JUNE 17 (from RIA Novosti's Oleg Ossipov) - Russia has to thoroughly improve statistics in forestry and timber industry--"we ought to know precisely just how much timber of what quality there is in this country, and where it grows and is felled," President Vladimir Putin said to a State Council presidium session. He called the federal administration to issue streamlined rules which will promote corporate reforestation activities. Russia needs to blueprint future-oriented economic patterns in that sphere--in particular, long-term forest concessions and leasing, added the President. Whatever problems may be obsessing that economic branch, big and viable companies are emerging. They use pioneer technologies for quality produce and--which matters even more--do not forget to renew forests, said Mr. Putin. He highlighted forest fires as one of the worst problems. All too often, they are not natural calamities but caused by negligence, predatory competition, and a criminal way of tax evasion, stressed the President.
