The area of notifications and applications for permits for felling in Sweden was 15,135 hectares in May, a 33% decrease compared with May 2025, the Swedish Forest Agency reported.

The area of applications for permits for felling in montane forests rose to 873 hectares in May, up from 193 hectares in May last year, about 4.5 times the previous level.

The area of notifications and applications decreased in all regions in May. The largest decreases were in Southern Norrland, down 3,117 hectares or 40%, and in Götaland, down 1,959 hectares or 45%. Northern Norrland fell 1,092 hectares (24%) and Svealand fell 1,127 hectares (20%).

From January to May the area of notifications and applications for permits for felling was 103,464 hectares, a decrease of 2% compared with the same period last year. Year-to-date the area decreased by 18% in Northern Norrland and by 48% in Götaland, while Southern Norrland increased by 34% and Svealand increased by 14%. On county level the area decreased in all counties except Dalarna and Gävleborg.

The average area of notifications and applications for the country as a whole showed an increase of 10% compared with the corresponding period in the preceding five-year period. So far this year, the area concerning applications for permits for felling of montane forests was 2,990 hectares, compared with 2,226 hectares for the corresponding period last year.
