Oct 09, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. Asda is to recycle 25,000 tonnes of cardboard from stores in North-East England at a new GBP 9 million ($18 million) reprocessing facility, retailer said. The 75,000sq ft plant is located next to an existing Asda warehouse on the Pattinson Industrial Estate in Washington and has been designed to help save more than 90 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. An Asda spokeswoman said the retailer would be opening a second facility in Erith, Greater London, "in the near future" and continued to "consider other opportunities". The Sunderland plant, which took nine months to build, will generate 60 jobs in the Washington area. Developed in conjunction with Sunderland City Council, the plant will initially serve 29 Asda stores in the area, although has the capacity to take cardboard and plastic waste from 50 stores. Asda, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wal-Mart, is among the UK retailers calling for an end to the recycling postcode lottery.
