British Columbia collaborates with ‘Namgis First Nation to promote forest stewardship and sustainable forestry, aiming for a balanced approach that benefits local communities and the environment.

In a move toward sustainable forestry, British Columbia and the ‘Namgis First Nation have initiated formal talks for a joint decision-making agreement to enhance forest management and ensure the longevity of forestry jobs in the region. Minister of Forests, Bruce Ralston, emphasized the collaboration's focus on sustainable forest management and its role in supporting local employment and advancing reconciliation.

The discussions are part of the Tree Farm Licence (TFL) 37 Forest Landscape Planning pilot project, which also includes Western Forest Products Inc. This partnership aims to develop forestry practices that are both environmentally sustainable and economically beneficial, promoting forest health and local job security.

A Section 7 agreement under the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act is considered the optimal strategy for establishing a cooperative decision-making framework in the ‘Namgis territory, particularly within TFL 37. This agreement is expected to empower the ‘Namgis Nation to fulfill its stewardship roles effectively, ensuring the preservation of the Nimpkish Valley's unique ecosystems while also fostering economic growth and job creation in the area.

Negotiations for the agreement will include consultations with adjacent First Nations, local governments, and stakeholders, focusing on the sustainable management of the ‘Namgis territory's forest resources. Public engagement efforts, including a recent information session in Port McNeill, have been underway to gather input on the draft forest landscape plan (FLP) developed by ‘Namgis and Western Forest Products.

Western Forest Products' CEO, Steven Hofer, expressed support for the partnership and the draft FLP, highlighting its importance for the sustainable future of the company's operations in TFL 37.
