British Columbia has launched the Provincial Forest Advisory Council with 10 appointed members tasked with advising the government on measurable strategies for forest sustainability, economic stability, and land stewardship. The group operates under the 2025 Cooperation and Responsible Government Accord, jointly established by the B.C. government and the BC Green caucus, according to the Ministry of Forests.

The council includes co-chairs Garry Merkel of the University of British Columbia and Shannon Janzen, former chief forester at Western Forest Products. Other members represent forestry research, labor unions, professional associations, and government, including Norah White, B.C.’s deputy chief forester, and Jeff Bromley, chairperson of the United Steelworkers Wood Council.

Members are expected to consult with stakeholders, environmental experts, and First Nations. The council aims to deliver an interim report in fall 2025 and a final report by year-end.
