California’s lumber suppliers and builders warn that a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, set to take effect on February 1, will drive up homebuilding costs and delay projects. Developers fear higher prices will make construction less affordable, especially in wildfire recovery areas.

Ganahl Lumber Co., which imports 20% of its wood from Canada, expects immediate price hikes. Pete Meichtry, the company’s vice president, told The Sun that domestic suppliers would likely raise prices in response, leaving builders with no way to avoid higher costs.

The California Building Industry Association estimates the tariffs could add $35,000-$45,000 to a new home’s cost. Builders are advising clients to prepare for rising expenses and considering alternative materials, but industry leaders say the impact on lumber prices will be unavoidable.
