China’s log imports fall 13% in 2025, marking fourth consecutive annual decline

China’s imports of logs decreased 13% year-on-year in 2025 to 31.38 million m3, while the value of imports declined 22% to $4.81 billion, according to Lesprom Analytics.

The average import price fell 10% to $153 per m3. This was the fourth consecutive annual decrease, with 2025 volumes at half of the 2021 peak level of 63.57 million m3.

New Zealand remained China’s largest supplier, providing 58% of total imports. Shipments from New Zealand rose 2% to 18.20 million m3, priced at $117 per m3. Japan ranked second with 6% of total volume, up 4% to 1.71 million m3 at $121 per m3.

Papua New Guinea supplied 5% of imports, down 23% to 1.60 million m3, at an average price of $215 per m3. Canada increased its share by 12% to 1.33 million m3, priced at $194 per m3. Russia delivered 1.23 million m3, down 14%, at $132 per m3, while the Solomon Islands reduced exports 31% to 1.09 million m3 at $163 per m3.

Germany’s shipments fell 46% to 0.76 million m3 at $213 per m3. France’s exports declined 22% to 0.51 million m3 at $317 per m3. Latvia expanded deliveries 53% to 0.59 million m3 at $132 per m3, while Australia’s volume decreased 19% to 0.49 million m3 at $133 per m3.

Softwood logs accounted for 77% of total imports at 23.92 million m3, hardwood 13% at 4.01 million m3, and tropical species 10% at 3.21 million m3. Softwood logs averaged $122 per m3, hardwood $248 per m3, and tropical species $263 per m3.

Within softwood imports, Radiata Pine represented 74% of total softwood volume at 17.67 million m3, priced at $116 per m3. Other softwood species accounted for 15% at 3.59 million m3 and $140 per m3, Spruce and Fir 8% at 1.79 million m3 and $144 per m3, and Pine 4% at 0.87 million m3 and $122 per m3.
