Furniture imports to Germany rose 17% year-on-year to Euro 3 billion in the first quarter of 2025. Imports from China surged 37%, putting the country back in the lead among furniture suppliers to Germany. Vietnam also saw strong growth with a 23.5% increase. These increases may reflect trade redirection caused by U.S. tariff policy, according to the German Furniture Industry Association (VDM).
German furniture exports remained stable at approximately Euro 2 billion, down just 0.5% from the previous year. France, the leading export market, saw a 2.2% decline to Euro 317 million. Deliveries also fell to Austria (down 0.3%), the Netherlands (down 2.2%), the United Kingdom (down 7.4%), and Belgium (down 2.1%). In contrast, exports rose to Switzerland (up 2.9%), Italy (up 8.9%), and Spain (up 11.6%). Shipments to the United States grew 9.6%, possibly due to advanced purchasing in anticipation of future tariffs, VDM noted.
