Domtar plans to indefinitely idle operations at its Coosa Pines, Alabama, fluff pulp mill in May 2026. The company says it is preparing a safe and orderly wind-down of production at the site, according to Domtar Corporation.

The mill is located on Alabama’s Coosa River and began operations in 1950 as a joint venture between Kimberly-Clark and newspaper publishers. It produced newsprint for publishers mainly in the Southeastern United States before adding fluff pulp in 1976 with a new kraft line, a recovery boiler and a pulp dryer.

The facility produces fluff (kraft) pulp used in tissue and absorbent consumer products. It has annual market pulp production capacity of 270 thousand metric tons, operates one pulp dryer and employs 275 people.

Domtar says difficult market conditions and aging assets have raised the cost of maintaining and operating the mill. The company says it will provide career transition resources, benefits guidance and ongoing communication for employees, their families and the Coosa Pines community during the shutdown process.
