Domtar will permanently cease operations at its Crofton pulp mill in British Columbia, Canada. The closure will eliminate approximately 380,000 air-dried metric tons of annual northern bleached softwood kraft pulp production and directly impact around 350 employees, according to Domtar.
The company cited prolonged poor pulp market pricing and a lack of access to affordable fiber in British Columbia as the primary reasons for the shutdown, despite significant operational cost reductions achieved by the mill's workforce over the past 18 months.
Domtar stated it will maintain the site in compliance with all environmental regulations and is evaluating potential future uses for the facility.
