The total area covered by notifications and applications for felling in Sweden fell by 8% in September compared to the same month in 2024, reaching 22,400 hectares. Applications for felling in montane forests totaled 161 hectares, down from 836 hectares, marking an 81% decrease, reported Swedish Forest Agency.
Compared with the five-year September average, the total area decreased by 24%, and by 23% compared to the ten-year average.
Regionally, three out of four areas reported year-on-year declines. Northern Norrland saw the largest decrease, down 1,204 hectares or 18%. Svealand dropped 583 hectares (10%), and Götaland declined by 427 hectares (7%). In contrast, Southern Norrland recorded a rise of 262 hectares, or 5%.
From January to September, the cumulative area of notifications and applications for felling reached 187,217 hectares, up 11% compared to the same period last year. Montane forest applications during this period totaled 2,920 hectares, compared to 3,397 hectares in 2024.
So far this year, notified and applied areas increased in all regions: Northern Norrland by 12%, Southern Norrland by 22%, Svealand by 4%, and Götaland by 7%. The national average area for January to September remained unchanged when compared to both the previous five- and ten-year periods.
