Finland’s industrial roundwood harvest reaches 60 million m3 in 2024

A total of 60 million m3 of roundwood was harvested for industrial use and export in Finland in 2024, according to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). The final statistics will be published in April.

In December, industrial roundwood harvests reached 4.9 million m3, 1% less than the same month in the previous year. Commercial fellings of sawlogs and pulpwood were each 2.5 million m3. Industrial roundwood removals from non-industrial private forests amounted to 3.8 million m3, marking a 3% decline. Meanwhile, removals from state-owned and forest industry company forests totaled 1.1 million m3, down 10%. Energywood removals for the month were 383 thousand m3, with 70% consisting of delimbed stems and whole trees.

For the full year 2024, removals declined by 800 thousand m3 compared to the previous year and remained 4% below the average level of the last five years. The majority, 79%, of commercial fellings originated from non-industrial private forests, contributing 48 million m3, a 3% reduction. In contrast, removals from state-owned and forest industry company forests rose by 4% to 13 million m3.

By wood type, log removals totaled 28 million m3, increasing 3% from the previous year, while pulpwood removals stood at 32 million m3, decreasing 5%. Pine accounted for the highest share of industrial roundwood harvests at 28 million m3, followed by spruce at 23 million m3 and hardwood at 9 million m3. Energywood removals dropped 22% to 6 million m3, with 55% consisting of delimbed stems and whole trees.

Preliminary data for commercial fellings is based on reports from 25 companies, while final statistics will incorporate data from over 120 companies.
