Galivants Ferry Sawmill has announced a $10 million investment to open a new sawmill operation in Horry County, South Carolina, creating 18 direct jobs. The facility is located in the rural area of Galivants Ferry, near Aynor, and aims to support local loggers impacted by recent mill closures, according to the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation.

The new mill is a sister company to SB Mulch, Johnson Land and Timber, and Beach Mulch. It will supply railroad ties, pallet manufacturers, landscapers, wastewater treatment facilities, and boiler-fueled businesses using waste fiber. Construction of the mill has been underway for nearly a year.

Company representatives stated that the facility intends to continue expanding over the next several years. Available jobs will be posted on Indeed.

The investment follows the closure of several regional mills, including in Georgetown, and is expected to boost the timber industry by restoring processing capacity and supporting multiple indirect jobs across transport and operations.

In August, Canfor Corporation closed its Estill and Darlington sawmills in South Carolina, reducing U.S. lumber production capacity by 350 million board feet annually and affecting approximately 290 employees, the company announced. Canfor cited persistently weak market conditions and sustained financial losses, with President of Canfor Southern Pine Lee Goodloe stating the closures reflect economic realities and the company’s focus on operational efficiency.
