Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, plans to open 20 new smaller-format IKEA locations across Europe and North America within the coming six months, adding to its traditional stores and city formats, the company said.
In France, IKEA will open a 2,000 m² compact store in Limoges by summer, and plans additional compact stores in other parts of the country. Coimbra will be the first city in Portugal to host the format, with a store spanning more than 4,000 m². In Poland, IKEA is set to open its second store by the end of the year in Białystok.
The stores will focus on everyday essentials, with more than 2,000 home furnishing products and accessories available for immediate purchase, and the full range available through pick-up or delivery options. The format will combine planning services, staff assistance, a selected food offer, and locations positioned where people already shop for daily needs.
Ingka said the smaller stores are designed to open faster than traditional large stores or metropolitan city stores and are intended to complement its existing network, including its fulfilment operations.
Ingka said investment in the smaller-store rollout is part of a Euro 5 billion, three-year plan to open new locations and improve existing ones across most of its 32 markets. The company said it will evaluate the performance of the compact stores after the end of FY26 and decide on next steps.
