Masisa gives the go-ahead to new MDP mill in Chile

Aug 11, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. Masisa's Board of Directors has approved the investment in a medium density particleboard (MDP) mill in Cabrero, Chile, Wood Panels Online reported. The new MDP mill, which requires an investment of US$55 million, will have a production capacity of 280,000 cu m of MDP a year and will create 145 jobs once it becomes functional and 250 during the project stage. Aimed at the domestic and export markets, part of this project will involve the conversion of an MDF line that is shut down at the Cabrero complex. The mill will start up in the first half of 2011.
MASISA started to produce MDP at its Montenegro mill in Brazil as of June this year with the start-up of the model mill entailing an investment of US$140 million, which has a production capacity of 750,000 cu m a year and a melamine line with a capacity of 300,000 cu m.
The company is currently in the stage of filing an environmental impact statement with the National Environmental Agency (CONAMA). When this is approved, the project envisages an 18-month construction term.
