Mellanskog, one of the leading wood suppliers in Sweden, reduces the base price of hardwood pulpwood by 50 kr/m3fub to 580 kr/m3fub and fuelwood by 50 kr/m3fub to 500 kr/m3fub, effective August 20, 2025, company announced. This marks the cooperative’s first price decrease since October 2019, when it last lowered pulpwood and sawlog rates in response to high supply and weak global demand.
For several years, Swedish forestry companies have raised timber prices in response to strong global demand, infrastructure investments, and the need to improve forest accessibility. The latest adjustment by Mellanskog may indicate a shift, as the impact of weak construction activity and declining sawmill profitability begins to affect harvesting operations. In the first half of 2025, Sweden’s exports of lumber dropped 14%, underscoring the pressure on the forest industry.
The current reduction follows a continued oversupply of wood on the market, driven by a mild winter and a strengthened Swedish krona. These factors have contributed to falling product prices across the forest industry. Despite the decrease, Mellanskog states that timber prices remain high and conditions favorable for forest owners.
According to CEO Fredrik Munter, the price cut reflects current market dynamics and supports long-term value for members.
