Metsä Tissue, part of Metsä Group, has started full-scale production at its expanded and modernised tissue paper mill in Mariestad, Sweden. The Euro 370 million investment doubles the mill’s annual capacity to 145,000 tonnes, reinforcing the supply of tissue products across Scandinavia, according to Metsä Group.

The expansion includes a new tissue paper machine and three converting lines for rolled and folded products. The increased capacity improves supply reliability and shortens delivery times by reducing dependence on imported tissue.

Nearly 100 new jobs have been created through the project, strengthening Metsä Tissue’s presence in Sweden and supporting local employment. The facility features a fully automated high-bay warehouse and laser-guided vehicles that streamline logistics, enhance delivery reliability, and provide real-time inventory control.

Energy efficiency and water consumption at the Mariestad mill have improved through new paper machine technology, reducing emissions per tonne of production. The project focuses on fresh fibre-based production, increasing the fresh fibre share of Metsä Tissue’s Swedish mills to 80%. Fresh wood fibre is used to ensure hygiene and high product quality.

CEO Sari Pajari-Sederholm states that the Mariestad investment combines advanced technology and expertise to strengthen local manufacturing and improve self-sufficiency in tissue production across the region.
