Up to 90 minutes could be cut off the travelling time between Ireland and the Port of Liverpool on completion of the £25m Twelve Quays River Terminal early next year.
Developed by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, the terminal will eliminate the need for ferries to lock in and out of port.
On completion, Norse Merchant Ferries will move from in-dock terminals on the the river to operate an initial six sailings a day four to Belfast and two to Dublin. Norse Merchant services Balcas and Willamette Europe in Ireland, with Louisiana-Pacific likely to follow. Far Eastern timber and plywood and some Canadian timber are shipped from Liverpool to Ireland.
