In Sweden, the area of received notifications and applications for permits for felling totaled 26,055 hectares in January, up 35% from January 2025, based on figures released by the Swedish Forest Agency. Applications for permits to fell in montane forests covered 152 hectares, down from 518 hectares a year earlier, a 71% decline.

Compared with the country’s January average over the previous five years, the notified and applied-for area is up 50%. Compared with the January average over the previous ten years, it is up 42%.

At the regional level, the notified and applied-for area increased in Southern Norrland and Svealand and decreased in Northern Norrland and Götaland versus January last year. Northern Norrland fell by 615 hectares (-17%), Southern Norrland rose by 6,195 hectares (+98%), Svealand rose by 3,340 hectares (+85%), and Götaland fell by 2,131 hectares (-39%).

Sweden was hit by storm Johannes on December 27, 2025. During the spring, the agency will compare received-notification statistics with the previous five-year average, and it said larger-than-normal areas have so far been notified for felling in Dalarna and Gävleborg counties.
