Pulpwood and log prices in Finland rose sharply in April, setting new records in several categories. The volume of industrial roundwood purchased from private forests rose 52% compared to the average for the previous five Aprils, while total trade volume from January to April was 20% higher than in the same period last year and 26% above the five-year average, according to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).

In standing sales, the average price for spruce logs reached almost Euro 85 per m3 and pine logs nearly Euro 83 per m3, increasing 1% and 2% respectively from March. Birch logs averaged over Euro 67 per m3. Prices for pulpwood in standing sales also rose: spruce to over Euro 35 per m3 (up 1%), birch to almost Euro 34 per m3 (up 2%), and pine to just over Euro 33 per m3 (up 3%).

Year-on-year, standing sales prices increased 6% for spruce logs, 7% for pine logs, and 3% for birch logs. Pulpwood prices in the same category rose 8% for spruce, and 9% for both pine and birch.

In delivery sales, spruce and birch pulpwood prices rose 1% to around Euro 54 per m3, while pine pulpwood declined slightly to just under Euro 53 per m3. Compared to April 2024, these prices were up 5–6%.

April’s figures mark the highest real pulpwood prices recorded since monthly tracking began in 1995. For standing sales, pine and birch pulpwood prices reached all-time highs, while spruce pulpwood prices matched levels last seen in 2007. Standing sales log prices also returned to heights last observed in 2007–2008.
