MOSCOW, JUNE 17 (from RIA Novosti's Oleg Osipov) - President Vladimir Putin does not think Russia's timber industry has yet transferred to civilized market relations. He made this clear in the Kremlin Monday as he opened a State Council session devoted to problems facing the sector. The country's "huge forest resources could bring sustainable, decent revenues" to the federal coffers, President Putin pointed out. Unfortunately, this is not the case so far, he said. According to the amount of revenues brought in by the industry, the production of timber has shrunk by a factor of three in the past decade. The actual output, however, may not have decreased as dramatically, which makes the situation "doubly insulting" to the government, Mr. Putin remarked. In his view, the reason is that no adequate economic and legal conditions have been created for the timber sector's sustainable development.
