Richard Smith, 60, is chairman and editor-in-chief of Newsweek. Prior to becoming chairman in March 1998, he served as president from 1991 until 1998. Mr. Smith was chairman of the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) from 1996 to 1997 and the founding chairman of the MPA's New Media Committee. He is also a former board member of the American Society of Magazine Editors.
Mr. Smith received a B.A. degree from Albion College, and received his M.S. in journalism from Columbia in 1970.
With the election of Richard Smith, Temple-Inland's board consists of 13 members. The membership of all committees of the board consists entirely of independent directors.
Temple-Inland Inc. operates four business segments: corrugated packaging, forest products, real estate and financial services.
