SIG has announced an expansion plan for its Querétaro plant that will double production capacity from 1.5 to 3 billion packs per year as part of its growth strategy in Mexico and North America. The project includes new production lines and the integration of extrusion processes to generate economies of scale.
The expansion unfolds in two phases. Phase I adds new production lines and finishing technologies starting in 2026, followed by a new printing line in 2027. Phase II, which integrates extrusion capabilities, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028. The plan will relocate some production processes currently carried out in Europe to Mexico, advancing SIG's nearshoring strategy.
The Querétaro facility currently directs 70% of its output to the Mexican market, with the remaining 30% exported to the United States and Canada. The plant employs 254 people, and the expansion is expected to generate approximately 40 new direct jobs.
Ricardo Rodríguez, President Americas at SIG, stated that the expansion strengthens operations to be more agile, efficient, and closer to customers in the region.
