The Producer Price Index (PPI) for softwood lumber fell 0.4% in August 2025, following a 0.2% decline in July. In contrast, the hardwood lumber PPI rose 0.5%, continuing its increase after a 0.6% gain the previous month. Millwork increased 0.5%, building on a 0.3% rise in July. Plywood prices also rose 0.3%, after a 0.4% increase in the prior month. Meanwhile, the PPI for softwood veneer and plywood dropped 0.5%, extending its decline after falling 1.7% in July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The overall PPI for final demand decreased 0.1% in August, after rising 0.7% in July and 0.1% in June. On an unadjusted basis, the index increased 2.6% over the 12 months ending in August. The August decline resulted from a 0.2% drop in prices for final demand services, while prices for final demand goods edged up 0.1%.
The PPI for final demand excluding foods, energy, and trade services rose 0.3% in August, marking the fourth consecutive monthly increase. Over the 12-month period ending in August, this core index rose 2.8%, the highest annual gain since a 3.5% increase in March 2025.
