Sweden’s notified felling area decreases 27% in December

In Sweden, the total area notified or applied for felling in December was 16,704 hectares, a decrease of 27% compared with December 2024, according to the Swedish Forest Agency.

Of this, applications for permits for felling in montane forests covered 310 hectares, compared with 3,139 hectares in December last year.

Compared with the five-year December average for the country, the total area decreased by 18%. The decrease is also 18% compared with the ten-year December average.

The area of notifications and applications decreased in all regions compared with the same month last year. In Northern Norrland, the area fell by 2,572 hectares, or 38%. In Southern Norrland, the decrease was 881 hectares, or 15%. In Svealand, it fell by 882 hectares, or 18%, and in Götaland by 1,704 hectares, or 32%.

For the full year 2025, the area of notifications and applications for permits for felling was 252,377 hectares, representing an increase of 3% compared with 2024.

Applications for permits for felling of montane forests covered 4,969 hectares in 2025, compared with 9,100 hectares in 2024.

On a regional level, Northern Norrland recorded a 4% increase and Southern Norrland a 13% increase in total notified and applied area. Svealand showed a 2% decrease, and Götaland a 4% decrease compared with 2024.

Compared with the average area for the country during the previous five-year period, the decrease was 4%. Compared with the corresponding period over the previous ten years, the decrease was 5%.
