Oct 16, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. The State owned forest company Sveaskog will voluntarily set aside forests for protection, Nordic Family Forestry reported. In combination with new working methods this will make it possible to reach the Parliament's target for forest protection by 2010. The target is to set aside 900,000 hectares of forest for protection, which shall be exempted from commercial exploitation. Sveaskog is going to contribute to the target and will set aside 70,000 hectares. Mr Andreas Carlgren, Minister for the Environment, says that the Parliament’s target by 2010 can be reached. Maintaining present appropriations for biodiversity and using increased opportunities for temporary agreements with forest owners for quick protection of valuable forests will make this target attainable. Minister Carlgren also appeals to the country's big forests owners to make further efforts in order to reach that target.
