After the negotiations conducted between the Japanese veneer enterprises and round timber importers, tropical timber prices remained on the prior level in June 2004, Japan Lumber Report announced. According to Japanese importers, the real price of round saravak meranti timber is 6.600 yens per 1 cocu (1 cocu = 180 kg) under CIF terms, however during the negotiations the price was set at 6.300-6.400 yens per 1 cocu. Importers claim considerable losses of 200-300 yens per 1 cocu. Meanwhile Japanese veneer enterprises facing the market stagnation refuse to increase the payment for round timber. Under FOB terms meranti prices are $157-159 per cub m, down $3-4 compared with the prices reported earlier in July.
