Trump sets 50-day deadline for tariffs on furniture imports into the U.S.

President Donald Trump announced that the United States will impose tariffs on imported furniture within 50 days, following the completion of a federal investigation into timber, lumber, and wood products. He said in a post on Truth Social that the move will return furniture manufacturing jobs to states including North Carolina, South Carolina, and Michigan.

Politico cited an unnamed White House official who said that "Trump was referring to the Commerce Department’s Section 232 investigation under the 1962 Trade Expansion Act, launched in March, which covers timber, lumber, and wood products including furniture."

China, the leading supplier of wooden furniture to the United States, recorded an export value of $7.0 billion in 2024. The country shipped 139 million pieces to the U.S., accounting for 30% of its total wooden furniture exports. The average price of Chinese wood furniture exported to the U.S. was $50 per piece, according to Lesprom Analytics. In the first half of 2025, shipments of wooden furniture to the U.S. fell 8% to 60.0 million pieces, while export value declined 18%.

The United States accounted for 53.7% of India’s wood furniture exports in 2024, equal to 6.5 million pieces worth $353 million. India’s total exports reached 12 million pieces with a value of $743 million. The average price of Indian wood furniture supplied to the U.S. was $55 per piece, Lesprom Analytics stated.
