US Q1 log exports to Canada fall 48.8% while the price goes up

U.S. log exports to Canada decreased 48.8% y-o-y in first quarter 2019 to 469.3 thousand m3 with export value jumped 16.2% to $105.0 million, according to USDA data. The average price for logs supplied to Canada from U.S. soared 126.9% to $224 per m3. The share of Canada in U.S. log exports dropped 6.9 pp to 22.7%.

Log exports from U.S. to China decreased 34.7% to 910.3 thousand m3 with export value fell 44.6% to $190.9 million. Log exports to Japan declined 11.4% to 441.2 thousand m3 with export value dropped 25.9% to $94.3 million. 

The share of Japan in U.S. log exports expanded 5.25 pp to 21.3% due to decrease that of Canada (-6.9 pp) and China (-1.03 pp). The average price for logs exported to China declined 15.2% to $210 per m3 and that to Japan dropped 16.4% to $214 per m3.

U.S. log exports to Korea increased 14.1% to 89.3 thousand m3 with export value was up 1.54% to $14.9 million. Log exports to Vietnam expanded 8.58% to 51.1 thousand m3 with export value jumped 32.5% to $19.8 million.

Total log exports from U.S. in three first months of 2019 fell 33.2% y-o-y to 2.1 million m3 with export value decreased 28.4% to $469.8 million.
