The US 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.22% as of 19 March 2026, up from 6.11% the previous week but down from 6.67% a year ago, according to Freddie Mac. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage also increased to 5.54% from 5.50% last week, compared to 5.83% at the same time last year.
Despite the weekly increase, both mortgage rates remain lower than their levels from one year earlier. Freddie Mac's Chief Economist Sam Khater noted that potential homebuyers are positioned for a more affordable spring homebuying season, with improvements observed in purchase applications and pending home sales.
