United States increases hardwood plywood imports 20% in 2025

The United States imported 3.23 million m3 of hardwood plywood in 2025, up 20% year-on-year, while import value rose 22% to $2,402 million and the average import price increased 2% to $743 per m3, according to Lesprom Analytics.

Vietnam supplied 980 thousand m3, up 33%, taking a 30% share of total imports. Indonesia shipped 891 thousand m3, up 40%, lifting its share to 28%. Canada supplied 183 thousand m3, down 17%, and Russia supplied 178 thousand m3, up 3%.

Cambodia delivered 171 thousand m3, up 22%, while Malaysia and Thailand posted the fastest growth among the top suppliers, with volumes rising 65% to 133 thousand m3 and 70% to 108 thousand m3, respectively. Spain’s volume fell 64% to 96 thousand m3. Finland’s volume rose 186% to 84 thousand m3, and Italy’s rose 112% to 66 thousand m3.

By wood species, birch plywood totaled 1.71 million m3 in 2025, followed by hardwood plywood, excluding tropical species, at 1.17 million m3 and tropical plywood at 332 thousand m3. Walnut totaled 13 thousand m3 and bamboo 12 thousand m3, while mahogany was 916 m3 and agathis (kauri) was 505 m3.

Over 2019–2025, annual import volume ranged from 2.71 million m3 in 2024 to 5.30 million m3 in 2021, which was the period’s peak during the Covid-19 years. The average import price moved from $439 per m3 in 2020 to $737 per m3 in 2025.
