Heading for a rewarding career in the forest industry, six trainees are the first participating in a new training program developed and implemented by Western Forest Products. Under the guidance of Operations Manager, Randy Boas, instructors are leading the seven week program that will prepare new entrants with the skills required to be experts in a revitalized, safety focused workforce, as the company said in the press release received by Lesprom Network. Randy Boas explains, “We are preparing the trainees with a foundation of coastal logging practices so they can safely enter the workplace at WFP or with one of our contractors. Students will learn in a controlled setting with instructors adhering to a carefully planned curriculum.” WFP, with the support of WorkSafe BC, developed the comprehensive training program focused on worker safety, environmental awareness and the core skills necessary for entry into this demanding occupation. The new program will instill the culture of safety with an understanding of hazard assessment and the techniques for safe and productive execution of the task. Training modules based on WorkSafeBC handbooks and WFP standard operating procedures form the foundation for theory and practical training. The students are gaining hands-on experience learning how to assess and manage environmental hazards ensuring they do not become risks. They are also learning how to communicate and work efficiently as they set chokers on logs, rig stumps, buck logs and work around equipment. “Western is building a sustainable, globally competitive forest company. This training is a part of our strategic plan that includes investing in our people”, says Don Demens, President of WFP. The United Steel Workers Union supports the training initiative as they recognize the need to attract and train the next generation of loggers.
