May 30, 2008. /Lesprom.com/. AbitibiBowater said that its Kenogami mill in Jonquiere, Quebec, Canada received a 2008 Environmental Phenix Award from the Government of Quebec.
The mill was honored in the "Waste Management" category. According to AbitibiBowater, employee engagement has been the driving success factor at the Kenogami mill. Workers have spearheaded initiatives to reduce waste production, reuse and recycle plant bi-products and recover material to minimize waste sent to the landfill.
The mill employee efforts have translated into a reduction of landfill process waste by 51% and other residues by 60%.
The Kenogami mill produces uncoated groundwood and supercalendered papers and has an annual production capacity of about 200 thousand metric tons.
AbitibiBowater's Beaupre, Quebec pulp and paper mill also received recognition for being a finalist in the Environmental Phenix Award's "Product Development" category for pioneering the development of uncoated freesheet substitute products, like EcoLaser, which are lighter in weight, totally chlorine-free, and use less water and energy, as well as 50% less wood fiber than conventional offset paper.
The Environmental Phenix Awards are considered the most acclaimed environmental awards in Quebec. They are presented annually to companies, industry groups and community organizations that balance their commercial operations with sustainable development.
