Nov 28, 2007. /Lesprom Network/. It will lay off about 300 employees "indefinitely" as it reduces shifts at four sawmills due to poor lumber markets and a high Canadian dollar, Canfor Corp said.
Canfor said it will move to two shifts from three at its Rustad, Clear Lake, Polar and Mackenzie sawmills in British Columbia for an indefinite period. The change represents about 355 million board feet of annual lumber production.
The Vancouver, B.C.-based company said the new shift schedule will not impact its ability to meet customer and chip supply commitments.
The company said Nov. 9 that it would permanently close its panel and fiber mill in New Westminster, B.C., which employs 126 people and makes specialty timber products.
Canada's forestry industry has been reeling from the impact of the slow U.S. construction market and strong Canadian dollar.
Canfor shares added 4 Canadian cents at the open to $8.18 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
