Apr 28, 2005. /Lesprom Network/. Indonesia's Forestry Minister M.S. Kaban said China's President Hu Jintao pledged Chinese investment in the forestry sector in the country.
Kaban said Hu made the pledge at a meeting with him on Monday in Jakarta.
He said Hu gave no further details about the plan, therefore further talks will be held later with Chinese officials.
He said the Chinese investment in timber processing industry is expected to reduce illegal logging in the country and smuggling of trees to China.
With the operation of Chinese timber processing factories in Indonesia consumers in that country do not have to rely on smuggled timber, he added.
Indonesia has asked China to cooperate in eliminating smuggling of trees to that country from Indonesia but China denied allegation of using illegal logs.
