Nov 29, 2006. /Lesprom Network/. For outstanding performance in the areas of environmental and operational efficiency, Mondi Business Paper Hungary has been awarded the environmental-savings-award 2006 by KÖVET – the Conscious Corporate Management Association. The award was presented by the Hungarian minister of environment and waters, Miklós Persányi.
KÖVET created the prize in 2003 with the aim of raising public awareness of the achievements of companies in simultaneously reducing their impact on the environment and generating financial savings. In past years more than 50 companies have applied for the award and this year ten companies were in close competition for the prize.
Winners were announced in the award’s three categories: reduction of environmental impact, size of investment required and rate at which investments are recouped. Mondi’s business paper division was recognized in the second category for its significant improvements achieved through developments and regulations implemented at the company’s plant in Szolnok without any investment:
Modification of a cleaning plant resulted in a reduction of residuary materials by over 5 000 tonnes compared to 2003, annual savings of HUF 60-70 million (approx. Euro 230 000-270 000) through selective recycling; and reduction in waste volume by 6 000 cubic meters through improved waste management. Export performance also honoured.
The environmental-savings-award joins the long list of international awards that the business paper division of Mondi has received across many fields. In addition to its environmental award, the company in Hungary was recently recognized by the chamber of commerce and Industry of Jász-Nagykun Szolnok county for its strong export performance as the second largest exporting company in the region and one of the 15 largest exporters in the country.
Most notable are the numerous awards that the group has received for their environmentally responsible practices. Mondi Business Paper has won the WWF’s Panda Award twice in three years for its efforts in Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification of their Russian forest holdings. A long-term and sustainable timber supply for paper and pulp production is of the utmost importance to Mondi. The group cooperates with NGOs and has developed group-wide guidelines for the responsible acquisition of wood and virgin fibre.
