Mar 06, 2009. /Lesprom Network/. Estonia saw a slight increase in the manufacture of wood and related products at the start of the year, bucking a largely downward trend, as KMS Baltics informed Lesprom Network. Seasonally adjusted figures released by Statistics Estonia reveal that production in the sector was up by 1.8% in January when compared to the previous month. However, the year on year trend was down markedly, with figures showing a 35% fall. Overall, manufacturing in Estonia fell by 26.8% between January 2008 and 2009. A spokesperson for Statistics Estonia said: "The main reason causing the decline in the production was the insufficient market demand both in domestic and external markets." Fall in production was largely driven by the biggest sectors, namely food, wood and metal products. However, things could be looking up for the wood sector, as Kehra, Estonia's only packaging paper producer, recently announced it has restarted operations after lack of demand forced it to shut down in December.
